Reassurance of Beauty – July 2007
Artist Statement by Bonnie Duncan Bravo

Someone once told me to decorate my pots in the same manor that I dress my own body, which spurred me to think about each pot as a woman; dressing herself to be presented to the world. Over the past few years, I have been studying women and what it means to grow up female in our society, where inner beauty is pushed away so that the outer beauty may shine. The lengths women will go in search of beauty fascinate me. The idea of being beautiful if so tempting, so intriguing that we will do whatever it takes to achieve it. I heard a friend talking the other day about beauty products, saying that she will see an add on TV or in a magazine and literally rush out to get this miracle product; this item that will make her life easier or might save her…Finally she too will have beauty.

I watch women walk past a mirror or even a window, and as they catch a glimpse of themselves, stop for even a split second to make sure they’re looking at least presentable to the world, pulling at their skirt or tucking a flyaway, making adjustments that, in her mind, make all the difference.

So I decorate my pots with this mentality that many women have, to add a little more. More lipstick, a touch of blush and a wee bit of hairspray will do the trick. My pots go through a ten-step process in order to “put their face on”. And in the end, are put through an atmospheric firing in the soda kiln which reminds me a lot of this humid Florida climate; chancing all possibility of being beautiful at the end of the day.
